When the Money Moves: The Board's Role in Revenue Diversification

Description

With government funding contracting, foundation priorities shifting, and many nonprofits relying heavily on a small number of revenue sources, this session would examine how boards can help organizations prepare for a changing funding landscape. Participants would explore how to identify revenue vulnerabilities, ask better questions about the organization’s funding model, and help uncover new sources of support—including individual giving, corporate partnerships, planned giving, earned revenue, and other opportunities aligned with the organization’s mission and capacity.

The session would be interactive and designed specifically for the 50-minute virtual format. Participants would engage in a funding-forecast poll, respond to a brief scenario involving the reduction or loss of a major funding source, and identify one practical action their board could take within the next 30 days.

The three primary takeaways would be:

  • Recognize revenue concentration and identify funding changes that present the greatest organizational risk.

  • Engage board members in exploring and evaluating realistic new fundraising opportunities.

  • Select one practical board action that supports a more diverse and sustainable revenue mix.
