It is important for nonprofit organizations to periodically check on their tax-exempt status. Nonprofits that do not file taxes for three consecutive years will have their tax-exempt status automatically revoked by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
To confirm your organization’s status, go to the Tax Exempt Organization Search page on the IRS website. You might also want to check your status on the Iowa Secretary of State’s website by searching it in the Business Entities database.
More information on this and related issues are on the Revocation of Tax Exemption page on the National Council of Nonprofits website. Additional information can be found on the IRS page that addresses Frequently Asked Questions regarding automatic revocation.
