Grant dollars go to nonprofit organizations in the following categories: arts and culture; civic and community; education and literacy; health and welfare; United Way. In addition to these areas, a special fund for disaster relief, such as the 2008 Cedar Rapids flood, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti or the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, may be established for employee donations, often matched dollar-for-dollar, and provided to a specific organization devoted to assisting in the relief effort.
