Biography

Kristin joined MHCS in June of 2006. Kristin focuses on not-for-profit organizations and trade associations, as well as real estate and attest engagements under the Renewable Fuel Standard. She grew up in Iowa City, Iowa, and attended the University of Northern Iowa, where she received her bachelor’s degree in accounting. Currently, Kristin lives in West Des Moines with her husband, Shad, and their 3 boys, Sebastian, Quincy and Noah. She also has a step-daughter, Braelynn, that lives in Nebraska. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, watching TV, traveling and taking naps. Kristin is the treasurer of West Des Moines Historical Society and is an active member of the Young Non-Profit Professionals Network, the Iowa Society of Association Executives, the Iowa Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs. She is also on the ISCPA Not-for-Profit Organizations Conference committee.

Understanding Nonprofit Financial Statements and the Form 990

Many nonprofit board members and employees come from a for-profit, corporate background. While this may lay the groundwork for reviewing and understanding financial statements and tax returns, nonprofit organizations have unique accounting and reporting nuances that can make the transition more complicated than expected.
