Giving Tuesday 2025

Nonprofits strengthen our communities, and Iowans strengthen our nonprofits.

Giving Tuesday 2025 continued to break previous records with an estimated 38.1 million participants. Donations increased 13% to $4 billion. Giving of goods also increased by 4% with 13.5 million participants.

The largest increases were in volunteerism-- up 20% to 11.1 million participants--and those who spoke out about causes they care about--up 26% to 20.9 million participants.

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps, Iowa consistently ranks as one of the top states for charitable giving (6th) and volunteerism (10th). Iowa has historically been a top state when measured by the percentage of residents (81.5%) who read, watch, or listen to news or information about political, societal, or local issues.

Form 990 Filings Due May 15

This is a reminder that annual IRS Form 990 filings for 2025 are due on May 15, 2026, for most tax-exempt entities operating on a calendar-year basis.

The Form 990 (990, 990-EZ, 990-N, or 990-PF) is required to maintain tax-exempt recognition with the IRS. It can also be a powerful, public-facing document that promotes transparency and accountability, offering donors, volunteers, funders, policymakers, and the community insight into your organization's mission, programs, and financial health. Organizations that fail to file for three consecutive years risk automatic revocation of their tax-exempt status.

If you are unable to meet the May 15 deadline, you may request an automatic 6-month extension by filing Form 8868 on or before the due date. This additional time does not apply to the payment of any taxes owed.

You may find IRS guidance on annual filing and forms here
