Each year, the dsmHack committee solicits applications from nonprofit organizations in the Greater Des Moines area and beyond who need help overcoming a technology problem. Project submissions vary from digitizing paper processes, streamlining donor databases, to helping an organization create a web presence. While nonprofits prepare their dream projects, volunteers sign up to commit a weekend of their time to help these organizations.
Nonprofit organizations may submit applications outlining projects with which they need technical assistance. Over the course of the 48-hour hackathon, volunteers apply their technical skills to the projects chosen. At the end of the sprint, finished projects are presented to the whole group. The Des Moines Charity Hack has taken place for seven consecutive years and helped over 72 nonprofit organizations.
Applications from nonprofits who wish to have assistance are due by April 8.
