The Role of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations in Iowa

Role of Charitable Nonprofits

Recognizing the vital role of voluntary charitable community associations, Governor Thomas Vilsack in January 2004, appointed a Task Force chaired by Willard "Sandy" Boyd, to “assess the present and potential role of Iowa’s nonprofit sector in advancing the vitality of communities throughout the state.” The Governor charged the Task Force to identify the barriers to achieving the charitable nonprofit sector’s full potential and to develop and submit a set of recommendations describing how charitable nonprofit organizations can be more effective in their operations and how their services can be enhanced through collaborations with the business community and government entities. Finally, the Task Force was directed to recommend methods to increase citizen involvement in nonprofit activities throughout the state.
