Nonprofit News

The Iowa State Office of the Corporation for National and Community Service invites Iowa nonprofits, public agencies, and federally recognized tribes to apply to sponsor an AmeriCorps VISTA project.  A webinar on the Request for Concept Papers (RFCP) was held on September 6 and was recorded. Listen to the recording here. Another webinar is scheduled for October 4. Concept papers are due November 5, and final applications are due December 20. AmeriCorps VISTA members are full-time volunteers who create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. VISTA members serve primarily in the focus areas of economic opportunity, healthy futures, education, and veterans & military families.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach continues its Nonprofit Management Academy. The Academy courses meet at the Johnson County Extension Office, 3109 Old Highway 218 South in Iowa City. All offerings are on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee for each is $70 with CEU credit for an additional $25. Participants may take individual courses or may complete a combination of them to obtain a Certificate in Nonprofit Management. See details, registration, and additional course descriptions.

The Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation is preparing to launch a grant opportunity for small to mid-sized towns and cities. Up to 15 grantees will be awarded $25K each in matching funds to produce their own free outdoor concert series featuring a diverse line up of high caliber entertainment for people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy. Finalists are chosen by online public voting. Grant applications are being accepted until September 25, 2018. More information.

Independent Sector reports that the value of volunteer time continues to rise. The estimated value of volunteer time for 2017 is $24.69, an increase of 2.3 percent from 2016, according to the latest study. See details and a link to download a pdf of the full dataset.
