Not for profit organizations (NPO’s) attract enthusiastic employees who are eager to gain experience, contribute to a community need and build relationships. NPO’s exist because there is a niche to meet specific needs in a community often for underserved audiences. Challenges to retaining employees include lack of financial resources, challenges in reaching audiences, variable organizational, supervision and training structures, difficult caseloads and client needs. Staff burnout occurs when difficulties outweigh benefits. Secondary trauma occurs when client experiences influence staff function. Turnover of staff is costly for NPO’s in lost time, financial investments, and interupted community and client relationships.
